Weather…

Tourtonne is a historically developed district in northern Paramaribo, whose origins date back to the 18th-century plantation of the same name founded by French settler Jean de Tourtonne. Originally, sugar cane and later coffee were primarily cultivated here, with its coastal location presenting unique challenges for drainage. Throughout the 20th century, particularly starting in the 1960s, the area evolved into a dense residential and commercial district, now divided into several phases (Tourtonne 1-6). The main streets of Tourtonne are vital traffic arteries for the capital and home to numerous businesses, schools, and religious institutions. Despite the dense construction, the old canal structures of the plantation remain present in the cityscape and influence contemporary urban planning. The neighborhood is regarded as a dynamic center reflecting the economic growth of Paramaribo, bridging the gap between the colonial past and modern urbanity. Today, Tourtonne is a melting pot of cultures where the history of land reclamation remains palpable at every street corner.
