Frederiksdorp

Frederiksdorp is a former coffee plantation on the right bank of the Commewijne River, renowned for its beautifully restored colonial architecture. It was founded in 1747 by Friedrich Knöffel, a German settler from whom the plantation takes its name. During the 18th century, it was one of the most prosperous estates in the region, producing both coffee and cocoa. The historic complex includes the grand plantation house, overseers' quarters, and a former police station, all built in the traditional Surinamese wooden architectural style. A darker side of its history is preserved in the old jail cells, which are open to visitors and serve as a somber reminder of the era of forced labor. After the decline of the plantation economy, Frederiksdorp underwent extensive restoration in recent decades and now functions as a boutique hotel and museum. It is a model for sustainable cultural tourism, offering insights into plantation life and the history of slavery and subsequent indentured labor. The site is accessible only by boat, adding to its tranquil and authentic atmosphere.
