New Halfa, also called Halfa al-Jadidah, is a planned city in Kassala State, located in eastern Sudan. It was established in the 1960s to resettle Nubian communities who were displaced from the original Wadi Halfa due to the flooding caused by the construction of Egypt's Aswan High Dam. The city is situated on the Butana plain near the Atbara River and serves as the administrative hub for the New Halfa Agricultural Scheme, one of the country's largest irrigation projects. This scheme facilitates the large-scale production of cotton, wheat, and sugarcane, making it a cornerstone of national food security. The urban design of New Halfa is unique among Sudanese towns, featuring a grid-like layout and standardized housing units built for the displaced population. Today, the city remains a spirited bastion of Nubian culture and language while acting as a critical engine for the agro-industrial development of eastern Sudan.
