The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in the Galicia region is one of the most important Christian sanctuaries and the majestic destination of the world-famous Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago). According to legend, the cathedral's crypt houses the relics of the Apostle James the Greater, which were discovered in the 9th century. Construction of the present Romanesque basilica began in 1075 and it was consecrated in 1211. However, the original Romanesque masterpiece was hidden in the 18th century behind the spectacular Baroque western facade (Fachada del Obradoiro), which dominates the square of the same name today. Inside, visitors are awed by the massive Botafumeiro, a giant thurible (incense burner) that is swung across the transept at impressive speeds during solemn masses.
