In the sheltered inner bay of the Ría de Arousa, the sea is calm, and wave action is minimal. The municipality's best-known stretch of coast is the 2-kilometer-long Praia de Barraña, which is separated from the residential areas by a wide, grass-covered promenade and a local salt marsh (estuario). Similar beaches with extensive sandbanks are Praia de Carregueiros and Praia de Escarabote. A few hundred meters from the coastline, dozens of wooden platforms, known as "bateas", are anchored in the sea, upon which mussels and oysters are cultivated. These structures are clearly visible from the shores of Praia da Retorta, Praia da Ribeira Grande, and Cala do Chazo. The water deepens slowly in this section, and during summer low tides, the sandbanks extend outwards for hundreds of meters. On the eastern side of the coast are beaches fringed with Scots pines. These include Praia da Area da Secada, Praia de Rebordelo, Praia da Ladeira do Chazo, and Praia de Tras das Eiras, where the shady forest belt reaches directly down to the sand.
