💡 Tips
- The famous mud baths (Lodos) are free. Bring a bucket or bottle to scoop up the mud from the designated piers. Plan time to let it dry in the sun before rinsing off in the salt water.
- There are two seas: the calm, warm Mar Menor and the more open, cooler Mediterranean. The Mar Menor beaches are good for families, while the Mediterranean ones are often quieter.
- The best time to see flamingos in the salt flats (Salinas) is usually early morning or late afternoon. Bring a pair of binoculars.
- The cycling and walking path that cuts through the Salinas regional park is completely flat and provides an easy way to explore the unique landscape.
- Parking near the mud baths and popular beaches fills up fast in summer. Park a little further away and enjoy the walk.
🍽 Food
An intense fish and rice stew typical of the Mar Menor. Ask for the 'Pescado del día' (fish of the day) done caldero-style at restaurants along the Lo Pagán promenade.
Prawns from the Mar Menor, famous for their unique flavour. Best eaten simply grilled ('a la plancha') at a seafood restaurant near the harbour.
Salt-cured and dried fish roe (huevas) or tuna (mojama). Look for these in tapas bars, often served with almonds and a drizzle of olive oil.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Visit the street market for fresh fruit from the Murcia region, vegetables, and local delicacies. Market days vary, so check locally.
Buy some 'Flor de Sal', the hand-harvested sea salt from the local salt flats. It's a great souvenir, available in delicatessens or the park's visitor centre.
Take a long walk or bike ride on the paths that cut through the salt lakes. The silence is often only broken by the sound of birds.
This beach on the Mediterranean side of the park is wild and undeveloped. It's excellent for a quiet walk away from the crowds.
Go to the fishing harbour (Puerto Pesquero) early to enjoy the quiet atmosphere before the town wakes and the boats head out.
Water temperature…
San Pedro del Pinatar is situated at a unique junction between the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor, Europe's largest saltwater lagoon. The town is world-renowned for its 'Baños de Lodo' in the Lo Pagán area, where visitors apply mineral-rich mud directly from the lagoon for natural skin treatments. The shallow, warm waters of the Mar Menor make the town a convenient destination for families and water sports enthusiasts. The 'Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro' regional park is a protected wetland covering over 850 hectares. Here, nature lovers can spot flamingos and other migratory birds in their natural environment. Beaches range from the calm shores of the lagoon to the wilder sand dunes on the Mediterranean side, such as Playa de la Llana. Local gastronomy is heavily sea-influenced, with 'Caldero', a traditional rice dish made with local fish, being the culinary highlight. The town is easily accessible via the AP-7 motorway from both Murcia and Alicante airports. The best time to visit is from May to October, though the mild climate attracts health tourists even during the winter months.
