Roman Walls of Lugo (Spain)

Weather…

The Roman Walls of Lugo in Galicia are unique globally as the only remaining completely intact fortification of its kind from the Roman era. Constructed between 263 and 312 AD, the walls were built to defend the strategically important town of Lucus Augusti during a period of imperial instability. The perimeter spans 2,117 meters and encircles a historic area of approximately 34 hectares. With an average thickness of 4 to 7 meters and reaching heights of up to 12 meters, the structure was a formidable defensive barrier. Originally, it featured 85 towers, 71 of which are still standing today, maintaining their original defensive character. The walls were constructed using local slate and granite and are accessed through ten distinct gates. In 2000, the walls were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, the top of the wall serves as a continuous walkway, offering visitors a unique historical perspective of the city.
