Betanzos (Spain)

Weather…

Betanzos, known as the 'City of the Knights', is one of the seven historic capitals of the Kingdom of Galicia. Perched on a hill at the junction of the Mandeo and Mendo rivers, its old quarter has a density of monuments unmatched in the region. The medieval atmosphere remains palpable in the steep, narrow streets and beneath the three surviving stone gates of the ancient city walls. The town is famous for its three Gothic masterpieces: the churches of Santa Maria do Azogue, San Francisco (housing the magnificent sarcophagi of the Andrade family), and Santiago. A truly unique sight is the 'El Pasatiempo' park, an early 20th-century 'encyclopedic' park filled with statues, caves, and reliefs of exotic lands, built by the García Naveira brothers. It stands as a fascinating precursor to modern theme parks. Across Spain, the town is legendary for the 'Tortilla de Betanzos', a particularly runny and flavorful version of the Spanish potato omelet. Every June, a festival celebrates this culinary icon. The town also produces its own regional wine. Located just 25 kilometers from A Coruña, Betanzos is a mandatory stop for history buffs and gourmet travelers alike.
