Palma Cathedral (Spain)

Weather…

The Cathedral of Santa María of Palma, often simply called La Seu, is a gigantic masterpiece of Levantine Gothic architecture and the undisputed landmark of the island of Mallorca. Its location is unique: rising directly above the old city walls overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, it has a wide-open panorama. Construction was started in 1229 by King James I of Aragon, following the island's conquest from the Moors, on the site of the former main mosque, and was not completed until almost 400 years later in 1601. The building is famous for its incredible interior brightness, earning it the nickname 'The Cathedral of Light'. This is largely due to the massive, spectacularly colored rose window, which, with a diameter of nearly 12 meters, is one of the largest in the world. At the beginning of the 20th century, the famous architect Antoni Gaudí redesigned the interior, and later, contemporary artist Miquel Barceló added a fascinating ceramic mural to one of the chapels.
