Mountains of León (Spain)

Weather…

The Montes de León form an extensive and geologically ancient mountain massif in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, acting as a crucial connecting bridge between the Cantabrian Mountains in the north and the Central System in the south. This mountainous region almost entirely encloses the circular El Bierzo basin, sheltering it from the harsh Atlantic winds and thereby creating a notably mild microclimate within the valley. The bulk of the mountain range consists of extremely hard Paleozoic rocks, such as dark slate and quartzite, which have resisted severe erosion over millions of years. Its highest elevation is the imposing Teleno peak, which reaches a proud altitude of 2188 meters and often remains snow-capped well into the spring. Historically and culturally, the Montes de León are of inestimable value, as they are home to the fascinating anthropogenic cultural landscape of Las Médulas, the largest open-pit gold mine of the entire Roman Empire, which is now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
