Ponferrada (Spain)

Weather…

Ponferrada, located in the province of León, takes its name from the 'Pons Ferrata' (Iron Bridge) built in the 11th century to aid pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. The city's crown jewel is the Templar Castle, a sprawling fortress originally constructed by the Knights Templar in the 12th century. Covering more than 8,000 square meters, its crenelated walls and numerous towers make it one of the most spectacular examples of medieval military architecture in the Iberian Peninsula. The historic district surrounds the castle and features the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Encina and the Torre del Reloj (Clock Tower), which stands above the ancient city gate leading to the Town Hall square. Ponferrada is also the capital of the El Bierzo wine region, famous for its high-quality red wines made from the Mencía grape. The city's industrial heritage is preserved in the Energy Museum, located in a beautifully restored former power plant. Easily accessible via the A-6 highway or by train, Ponferrada is best visited between May and October. Pilgrims and tourists alike enjoy the local gastronomy, especially the 'botillo' (a spicy, smoked meat specialty) and the fresh produce from the Bierzo valley. Its unique mix of medieval mysticism and industrial history makes it a fascinating stop in northwestern Spain.
