Las Médulas
Las Médulas, located in the province of León, is one of Spain's most striking cultural and natural landscapes, serving as a dramatic monument to ancient human engineering. During antiquity, from the 1st to the 3rd century AD, this area operated as the largest and most significant gold mine in the entire Roman Empire. The Romans employed an ingenious and destructive hydraulic mining technique known as 'Ruina Montium' (wrecking of the mountains). By channeling massive quantities of water from nearby mountains through a 300-kilometer network of canals, they used water pressure to literally blast apart the reddish sandstone mountains and wash away the gold-bearing earth. The legacy of this massive displacement is a surreal topography of vivid orange-red rock pinnacles, jagged towers, and deep ravines, all beautifully contrasted against dense, ancient chestnut and oak forests. In recognition of its outstanding historical and geological value, Las Médulas was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.
