Lake Sanabria (Lago de Sanabria) in the province of Zamora is a remarkable natural feature, distinguishing itself as the largest natural glacial lake on the Iberian Peninsula. Covering an area of approximately 3.7 square kilometers and reaching depths of over 50 meters, its basin was gouged out of solid granite by a massive glacier descending from the surrounding mountains during the Würm glaciation. The lake is fed and drained by the Tera River and forms the centerpiece of the Lake Sanabria Natural Park, established in 1978 to safeguard this unique aquatic environment. The surrounding landscape is characterized by extensive forests of native oak, which turn bustling colors in autumn, and provides a crucial habitat for wildlife such as the Iberian wolf and European otter. During the summer months, the clear, cool waters and natural sandy beaches make Lake Sanabria a highly popular destination for swimming, kayaking, and recreational water sports.
