Las Médulas
Las Médulas is one of the most visually arresting cultural landscapes in Europe. What appears to be a natural wilderness of jagged red peaks and lush chestnut groves is actually the result of massive Roman hydraulic engineering. During the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, the Romans exploited this area for gold using the 'ruina montium' (wrecking of mountains) technique. By diverting water through a vast network of canals into hollowed-out shafts, they used water pressure to collapse entire sections of the mountain to extract the precious metal. Over 250 years, an estimated 800 tons of gold were removed, fundamentally altering the topography. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site where ancient chestnut trees surround the towering red remains of the excavated mountains. The 'Mirador de Orellán' provides a spectacular bird's-eye view of the entire mine, while several hiking trails lead through the massive red caves like La Cuevona and La Encantada. Located near the city of Ponferrada, Las Médulas is best explored on foot. The good visiting times are late spring and autumn, particularly at sunset when the red earth glows most intensely. A visitor center in the village of Las Médulas features insights into the sophisticated mining techniques that transformed this region into the Empire's primary gold source.
