Huelva Chemical Pole

The Polo Químico de Huelva (Huelva Chemical Pole) is one of the densest and strategically most important industrial agglomerations in Spain. This massive concentration of heavy industry facilities stretches along the estuaries of the Odiel and Tinto rivers and is logistically perfectly connected to the local deep-water port. Created in the 1960s as part of state development plans, the complex focuses on the resource-intensive processing of minerals - particularly the ores from the nearby Rio Tinto mines - as well as oil refining. Today, the pole is home to a variety of international companies producing basic and specialty chemicals, copper, fertilizers, and fuels. Despite its undisputed role as an economic engine for the Huelva province, the chemical pole is regularly scrutinized critically by environmentalists due to pollutant emissions and huge phosphogypsum dumps.
