Guadalest is one of Spain's most iconic villages, dramatically perched atop a granite mountain in the Alicante province. Entry to the historic center is through a tunnel carved into the rock, leading visitors to a scenic town square. The remains of the San José Castle offer wide-open 360-degree views of the surrounding Aitana mountains and the animated turquoise reservoir below. Beyond its natural beauty, Guadalest is famous for its collection of quirky museums, such as the Micro-miniature Museum and the Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum. Its white-washed houses and narrow cobbled streets are filled with local craft shops and cafes. Accessible by car from Benidorm or Altea, it is a popular day-trip destination. Early morning visits are recommended during summer to avoid the large tourist crowds.
