In early March, Chiclana celebrates a deeply traditional carnival that takes place mainly in the street. Costumes are obligatory, accompanied by music and folk parades.
Chiclana de la Frontera is situated in the southwest of the Cádiz province and serves as a significant municipality within the Bay of Cádiz. Founded in 1303 by Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, the town was for centuries a center of viticulture, belonging to the renowned Sherry triangle. Geographically, the area is defined by its extensive salt marshes within the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park and the seven-kilometer-long La Barrosa beach, frequently ranked among the best in Spain. A prominent landmark is the Island of Sancti Petri and its castle, built upon the foundations of the ancient Temple of Hercules Gaditanus. In modern times, Chiclana has transitioned from an agriculturally focused town into a luxury tourism destination while preserving its historic center and monuments like the Church of San Juan Bautista. Today, it has a population of around 85,000, with an economy heavily reliant on the service sector and high-end hotel hospitality.
