Founded in 1303 by Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, the town was for centuries a center of viticulture, belonging to the renowned Sherry triangle. Geographically, the area is defined by its extensive salt marshes within the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park and the seven-kilometer-long La Barrosa beach, frequently ranked among the best in Spain.
