Castillo de Loarre (Spain)

Weather…

The Castillo de Loarre, majestically perched on a rocky outcrop in the foothills of the Pyrenees, is not only the oldest but also the best-preserved Romanesque fortress in Europe. Built in the 11th century by King Sancho Ramírez of Navarre and Aragon, the castle initially served as a military outpost during the Christian reconquest (Reconquista) of Muslim-occupied territories, particularly the plains of Huesca. Later, an Augustinian monastery was added to the military structure, highlighting its dual function as a fortress and a spiritual center. The impressive walls, distinctive round towers, the magnificent Romanesque church of Santa María with its beautiful dome, and the mysterious crypt seem to grow directly out of the limestone rock. This authentic medieval atmosphere has also made the Castillo de Loarre a popular filming location for historical epics, such as Ridley Scott's 'Kingdom of Heaven'.
