San Juan de la Peña (Spain)

Weather…

San Juan de la Peña is a former Benedictine monastery in the province of Huesca, Aragon, Spain. Its unique location beneath a huge overhanging cliff gives it a dramatic setting. The monastery was founded in the 9th century and became the spiritual heart of the Kingdom of Aragon. The Romanesque church, consecrated in 1094, features a triple-apse design. The cloister, built in the 12th century, is renowned for its historiated capitals depicting biblical scenes. The monastery served as the Pantheon of the Kings of Aragon, with tombs of rulers including Ramiro I. It was abandoned after the ecclesiastical confiscations of 1835. Restoration began in the late 19th century, and it was declared a National Monument in 1889. Today, it houses a museum of sacred art. The surrounding landscape is part of the San Juan de la Peña Natural Park.
