Casa Batlló, located on the Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona, is one of Antoni Gaudí's most daring architectural creations and a prime example of Catalan Modernism. Originally an ordinary house built in 1877, it was completely redesigned by Gaudí between 1904 and 1906 for the textile industrialist Josep Batlló. The building is popularly known as the 'Casa dels Ossos' (House of Bones) due to its skeletal-looking balconies and bone-shaped columns. The spectacular facade is covered with a mosaic (trencadís) of colorful broken ceramic tiles and glass that shimmer in the sun like the scales of a dragon. The undulating roof is designed to represent the dragon's back, pierced by the lance of Saint George (the patron saint of Catalonia), which is symbolized by the tower-like chimney crowned with a cross. Inside, the fluid, organic design language continues, entirely devoid of straight lines.
