Battlefield of Bailén (Spain)

Weather…

The battlefield of Bailén in the province of Jaén marks a decisive turning point in the European history of the 19th century. Here, on the hot and arid slopes of Andalusia, a military sensation occurred in July 1808 during the Peninsular War: for the first time in an open-field battle, a seemingly invincible army of Napoleon Bonaparte's Empire was completely defeated. The Spanish troops, under the brilliant command of General Francisco Javier Castaños, used the rugged terrain and the scorching heat to their advantage, skillfully encircling the French forces led by General Pierre Dupont. Deprived of water and reinforcements, approximately 18,000 French soldiers were ultimately forced to surrender. This unexpected triumph sent shockwaves throughout Europe, shattering the myth of Napoleonic invincibility and encouraging other nations to take up arms against French domination. Today, a prominent monument in the town center of Bailén commemorates this glorious historical episode.
