Baelo Claudia (Spain)

Weather…

Baelo Claudia is an exceptionally well-preserved Roman archaeological site located in the Bolonia Bay, near Tarifa in Andalusia. Founded in the late 2nd century BC, the town grew into a vital commercial hub, primarily known for its trade with North Africa and its production of garum, a prized fermented fish sauce. Its strategic position along the Strait of Gibraltar led Emperor Claudius to grant it the status of a municipality, sparking a period of architectural grandeur. The ruins offer a comprehensive view of Roman urban planning, featuring a forum, a basilica, the curia, and temples dedicated to the Capitoline Triad of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva. Visitors can also explore the remnants of the theater, the marketplace, and the industrial salting tanks used for fish processing. A powerful earthquake in the 2nd century AD began the town's slow decline, leading to its final abandonment by the 7th century. Today, it remains one of Spain's most important Roman heritage sites.
