The Aljafería Palace in Zaragoza is a fortified medieval Islamic palace built in the second half of the 11th century during the reign of Abū Ja'far al-Muqtadir. It is considered the most significant monument of Taifa architecture, reflecting the splendor of the Banu Hud dynasty. After the Christian reconquest by Alfonso I in 1118, the palace was converted into a residence for the Kings of Aragon, who added Gothic and Mudéjar elements. Particularly noteworthy is the Golden Hall with its elaborate geometric decorations and the oratory area featuring the richly ornamented mihrab. In the 16th century, King Philip II expanded the palace into a citadel with bastions and a moat for military use. The building now houses the seat of the Cortes de Aragón, the regional parliament, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986 as part of the Mudéjar Architecture of Aragon.
