Dénia is a historic port city on the Mediterranean coast of the province of Alicante and the administrative center of the Marina Alta region. The city's roots trace back to Roman times when it was established as Dianium, named in honor of the goddess Diana. Overlooking the urban center is the Castle of Dénia, an impressive fortress of Moorish origin that has been expanded over centuries and now houses an informative archaeological museum. Dénia serves as a vital transportation hub, with its ferry port offering the quickest maritime connection from mainland Spain to the Balearic Islands. In 2015, the city was recognized by UNESCO as a 'Creative City of Gastronomy', a testament to the high quality of local seafood, specifically the world-renowned Red Prawn (Gamba Roja). The geography is dominated by the Montgó Massif, a protected natural park providing scenic hiking trails and unique botanical species. With over 15 kilometers of sandy beaches to the north and rocky coves to the south, Dénia attracts diverse visitors. The maritime district of Baix la Mar still reflects the city's long-standing connection to the sea.
