Alcalá la Real is a town of great historical importance in the province of Jaén, Andalusia. Its landscape is dominated by the monumental La Mota Fortress, perched on a hilltop, offering dramatic views of the surrounding olive groves. For centuries, this site was a strategic frontier fortification between the Moorish Kingdom of Granada and the Christian Kingdoms of Castile. The fortress houses a walled city, with a major church, walls, and towers, transporting visitors back in time. Below the fortress lies the modern town with its characterful streets and squares. Here you will find the Palacio Abacial, a magnificent example of Baroque architecture which now houses the town's museum. Alcalá la Real is also famous for its high-quality olive oil, as it is located in the heart of the world's largest olive-producing region. Visitors should definitely taste the local oils and visit one of the many oil mills. The Etnosur Festival, a free and popular world music festival, takes place every July, attracting thousands of visitors. The town is strategically located between the Renaissance cities of Úbeda and Baeza (UNESCO World Heritage sites) and the monumental cities of Granada and Córdoba, making it a well-suited base for exploring Andalusia. The best time to visit is during spring or autumn when the weather is pleasant. It is best reached by car to have the flexibility to explore the scenic landscape.
