Geoje is an island city in Gyeongsangnam-do province and is the second-largest island in South Korea after Jeju. The city is globally recognized as one of the most important hubs for the shipbuilding industry, hosting major corporations such as Samsung Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean (formerly DSME). Geographically, Geoje is closely linked to the mainland and the metropolis of Busan via the Busan-Geoje Fixed Link (Geoga Bridge), which opened in 2010. Beyond heavy industry, the island features striking natural beauty, including Oedo Botania, a marine botanical garden located on a nearby islet. Historically, Geoje gained significance during the Korean War as the site of the largest United Nations prisoner-of-war camp, which is now a memorial park. Its coastline is defined by rugged rock formations like Haegeumgang and pretty beaches such as Hakdong Black Pearl Pebble Beach. The city's economic prosperity is heavily tied to global maritime markets.
