Cape Point Nature Reserve (South Africa)

Weather…

Cape Point Nature Reserve is situated at the south-eastern tip of the Cape Peninsula and is part of the Table Mountain National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The reserve covers 7,750 hectares and is characterized by its spectacular coastal scenery, jagged cliffs, and unique biodiversity within the fynbos biome. Historically, the site is closely linked to the voyages of discovery by Bartolomeu Dias (1488) and Vasco da Gama (1497), who charted the sea route to India around this point. Two lighthouses mark the location: the old lighthouse built in 1859 on the mountain summit and a more modern one built in 1914 closer to the sea. The area is home to various wildlife, including Chacma baboons, Cape mountain zebras, elands, and over 250 species of birds. Visitors can ride the Flying Dutchman funicular to the old lighthouse for panoramic views of False Bay. Despite common misconceptions, Cape Point is not the southernmost tip of Africa, but it marks the point where the coastline turns eastward. The treacherous waters off the coast are notorious for storms and have claimed many shipwrecks over the centuries.
