Cape Columbine Lighthouse (South Africa)

Weather…

Cape Columbine Lighthouse is situated near the easy on the eye fishing village of Paternoster on the West Coast of South Africa. Commissioned on October 1, 1936, it holds the distinction of being the last manually controlled lighthouse built along the country's extensive coastline. The 15-meter tall square masonry tower is perched on a massive rock outcrop known as Castle Rock within the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve. It was named after the British barque Columbine, which was tragically wrecked in the vicinity back in 1829. This lighthouse was pioneering in its time, being the first in South Africa to integrate a light, fog signal, and radio beacon into a single operational unit. Despite the advent of automated systems, the manual heritage of this site remains a point of pride and historical interest. Its powerful light has a range of approximately 32 nautical miles, guiding ships safely through the rugged coastal waters of the Atlantic.
