Port of Saldanha (South Africa)

Weather…

The Port of Saldanha is located on the West Coast of South Africa and stands as the country's deepest and largest natural harbor. Developed in the 1970s, it was primarily engineered to facilitate the export of iron ore from the Sishen mines in the Northern Cape province. The port features remarkable infrastructure, including an ore jetty nearly one kilometer long capable of docking massive Cape-size bulk carriers. A dedicated 861-kilometer heavy-haul railway line connects the mines directly to the terminal, ensuring high-efficiency logistics. In addition to iron ore, Saldanha serves a critical strategic role in the storage and transshipment of crude oil, housing one of the continent's largest oil storage facilities. The sheltered waters of the bay also provide good conditions for commercial aquaculture, particularly mussel and oyster farming. In recent years, the port has been established as a Special Economic Zone (IDZ) to attract investment in maritime repairs and renewable energy manufacturing.
