Thulamela Ruins (South Africa)

Weather…

The Thulamela Ruins, located in the northern reaches of the Kruger National Park, are a significant archaeological site providing evidence of a sophisticated Late Iron Age culture. This walled citadel was inhabited between the 13th and 17th centuries by the ancestors of the Venda and Shona peoples and was part of a vast regional trading network. Excavations conducted in the 1990s revealed links to Indian Ocean trade, evidenced by the discovery of glass beads from India and Chinese porcelain shards. A major highlight was the unearthing of two royal graves, dubbed 'Queen Losha' and 'King Ingwe,' which contained exquisite gold ornaments and artifacts. The dry-stone walling techniques used at Thulamela are similar to those found at Great Zimbabwe, indicating high levels of architectural skill. The site served as a center for gold and iron smelting, which generated significant wealth for the community. Positioned on a strategic hilltop overlooking the Levuvhu River, it offered both defense and aesthetic appeal. Today, the ruins are accessible via guided tours, showcasing the complexity of African civilizations long before European arrival.
