Gonarezhou (Zimbabwe)

Weather…

Gonarezhou National Park is Zimbabwe's second-largest sanctuary and part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park. True to its name, which means 'Place of Elephants,' it is home to over 11,000 of these giants. The park is most famous for the remarkable Chilojo Cliffs, massive red sandstone ramparts that tower over the Runde River valley, creating a wide-open landscape. The park has a raw and authentic safari experience, characterized by its vastness and lack of crowds. Diverse habitats range from baobab-dotted plains to lush riverine forests. Birdwatchers can spot over 400 species, including rare raptors. The experience here is about self-reliance and the thrill of exploring one of Africa's last true wildernesses. Reaching Gonarezhou requires a robust 4x4 vehicle and good navigational skills, as many areas involve river crossings and unpaved tracks. It is accessible via the Chipinda Pools or Mabalauta entry points. Accommodations range from basic, scenic campsites to world-class luxury eco-lodges that focus on conservation and community involvement. The best time for a visit is during the dry season from May to October. During these months, the Runde River recedes, allowing vehicles to cross to the south bank and providing better access to the cliffs. The scenery is particularly photogenic in late afternoon when the cliffs glow deep red. The rainy season (November-April) can make many roads impassable.

Visiting
Gonarezhou National Park is a vast wilderness area explored by your own 4x4 vehicle or on a guided safari. Entry requires a permit obtainable at the park gate. Overnight stays are possible at designated campsites.
🕒
Typical hours
The park usually opens at sunrise and closes at sunset. Exact times vary seasonally. Night driving is strictly prohibited; game drives end before dark.

Time needed
Due to the park's remoteness and size, you need at least two to three days for the main highlights. For extensive game drives and hikes along the cliffs, plan four to five days.
Combine with

🧭
Getting there
Access is best by sturdy 4x4 vehicle. The nearest major town is Chiredzi; from there, a gravel road leads to the park entrance. Some roads can become impassable in the rainy season.
💡
Insider tip
Make sure to bring ample fuel, drinking water, and provisions - there are virtually no supplies inside the park. A stay at Chilojo Camp delivers unforgettable sunsets over the red cliffs.
