Palabora Copper Mine (South Africa)

Weather…

The Palabora Copper Mine is situated near Phalaborwa in the Limpopo Province, located directly on the doorstep of the famous Kruger National Park. It is renowned for having Africa's deepest open-cast pit, which reached a depth of over 800 meters before operations transitioned entirely to underground mining. Currently, the mine employs advanced block caving technology to extract copper ore from deep within the Earth. In addition to copper, the facility produces magnetite, vermiculite, and apatite, making it a highly diversified mineral complex. Established in 1956, commercial copper production began in 1966. The site features its own integrated smelter and refinery to produce finished copper cathodes on-site. Geologically, the operation targets a unique carbonatite complex that formed approximately 2 billion years ago. The mine is a critical economic driver for the Limpopo region and maintains a strong commitment to environmental stewardship.
