Karlsruhe Palace forms the centerpiece and origin of the city of Karlsruhe, which was founded in 1715 by Margrave Karl Wilhelm of Baden-Durlach. The architecture is world-renowned for its fan-shaped city layout: 32 radial streets and avenues emanate from the palace tower, arranged like the ribs of a fan. Originally built as a Baroque structure, the palace was remodeled in the Neoclassical style in the late 18th century according to designs by Balthasar Neumann and Albrecht Friedrich von Kesslau. It served as the residence for the Margraves and Grand Dukes of Baden until the abdication of the last Grand Duke in 1918. Following severe destruction from bombing raids in September 1944, the facade was faithfully reconstructed, while the interior was designed modernly for museum purposes. Today, the palace houses the Baden State Museum, one of the most significant cultural history museums in southwest Germany.
