El Bur, known in Somali as Ceelbuur, is one of the oldest and most historically significant towns in the Galguduud region of central Somalia. With a history stretching back several centuries, it was once a major spiritual and educational center for the region. El Bur is globally renowned for its unique tradition of meerschaum carving (Burcur); local artisans have for generations produced high-quality tobacco pipes and ornate vessels from sepiolite, a soft white mineral mined in the surrounding hills. The architecture of the old town still retains traces of classical Somali stonework, which is rare in this arid region. Geographically, El Bur is situated in a hilly semi-desert landscape rich in mineral deposits. Despite challenges from recent political instability, the town remains a symbol of Somali craftsmanship and cultural identity. Local markets function as a gathering point for the rural population, exchanging livestock for handmade tools and household goods.
