Saint-Vallier is located in the heart of the Saône-et-Loire department in the Burgundy region. The town's history is deeply intertwined with the Blanzy-Montceau coal mining basin. During the industrial revolution of the 19th century, Saint-Vallier transformed from a rural settlement into a bustling industrial center. The Canal du Centre, which runs through the town, played a critical role in transporting coal and supporting the development of local heavy industry. Since the closure of the mines in the 1990s, the town has successfully navigated a transition toward a more diverse economy focused on services and light manufacturing. Today, Saint-Vallier is a key member of the Creusot Montceau Urban Community, benefiting from regional economic integration and modern infrastructure. The town has made significant efforts to revitalize its urban landscape, converting former industrial sites into recreational areas and parks. Surrounded by the rolling hills of the Charolais countryside, it has residents a balance between its hardworking industrial heritage and the peaceful agricultural landscapes of rural Burgundy.
