Cluny Abbey (France)

Weather…

Cluny Abbey was the spiritual and administrative heart of the most influential monastic order in medieval Europe. Founded in 910 by William I, Duke of Aquitaine, the abbey was uniquely placed under the direct protection of the Pope, granting it significant political autonomy. At its peak in the 11th and 12th centuries, Cluny presided over a network of more than 1,000 monasteries across Western Europe. Its third abbey church, known as Cluny III, remained the largest church in Christendom until the construction of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. During the French Revolution, the abbey was suppressed, and much of its structure was demolished to be used as building material for the surrounding town. Today, only about ten percent of the original complex remains, including the southern transept and several historic towers, serving as a powerful reminder of Romanesque architectural grandeur and medieval monastic life.
