Wickham Anchorage (Solomon Islands)

Weather…

Wickham Anchorage, positioned on the southeastern coast of Vangunu Island, was a strategic naval anchorage that played a pivotal role during Operation Toenails in June 1943. The site was identified by Allied planners as a necessary staging area to protect the supply lines for the larger invasion of New Georgia. On June 30, 1943, elements of the U.S. 4th Marine Raider Battalion landed at Wickham Anchorage despite treacherous reef conditions and stormy weather that caused several landing craft to run aground. The American forces engaged the Japanese garrison in fierce combat, eventually securing the area and eliminating the threat to Allied shipping. Following its capture, the anchorage was used as an advanced base for PT boats and logistics craft, facilitating the continued push toward Munda Point. Today, the site remains a testament to the tactical complexity of amphibious operations in the Solomon Islands and the intense struggle for control of the region's waterways.
