Viru Harbor (Solomon Islands)

Weather…

Viru Harbor is a deep-seated natural inlet on the southern coast of New Georgia that played a vital strategic role during World War II. Japanese forces utilized the harbor as a protected base for their coastal barges, which moved reinforcements and supplies under the cover of the dense shoreline jungle. In June 1943, the US 4th Marine Raider Battalion executed a daring overland mission to capture the harbor, navigating through some of the most difficult terrain in the Solomon Islands to surprise the garrison. The successful seizure of Viru Harbor provided the Allies with a secure logistics base to support the subsequent push toward Munda Point. Today, Viru Harbor remains a remote and peaceful location, primarily known for its pristine natural environment and tranquil waters. Historical remnants, including Japanese coastal defense guns and overgrown fortifications, can still be found guarding the narrow harbor entrance.
