Kavachi Volcano (Solomon Islands)

Weather…

Kavachi is one of the most active submarine volcanoes in the Southwest Pacific, situated south of Vangunu Island in the Solomon Islands. Since its first recorded eruption in 1939, the volcano has periodically risen above sea level to form temporary islands, only to be eroded back beneath the waves by ocean currents. Often referred to as 'Reinhardt's Volcano,' it gained global fame in 2015 when researchers discovered scalloped hammerhead and silky sharks living inside the active crater despite extreme acidity and heat, earning it the nickname 'Sharkcano.' Eruptions are frequently phreatomagmatic, propelling plumes of ash and steam hundreds of meters into the atmosphere. Kavachi's continuous activity is a significant feature of the Pacific Ring of Fire and provides geologists with rare opportunities to observe the birth and erosion of volcanic islands in real-time.
