Mount Rendova (Solomon Islands)

Weather…

Mount Rendova is the highest peak on Rendova Island in the New Georgia archipelago of the Solomon Islands, reaching an elevation of approximately 1,063 meters. The mountain is an imposing, extinct volcano whose classic cone shape defines the landscape of the Western Solomon Islands. Its slopes are traversed by extremely steep ridges and deep ravines, entirely covered by dense, pristine montane rainforest. Geologically, the mountain consists of andesitic and basaltic lavas, bearing witness to the intense volcanic activity of the region during the Pleistocene. The mountain massif plays a crucial role in the island's climate by forcing trade winds to rise, thus ensuring regular rainfall. This moisture supports a unique flora, including many species of moss and epiphytic orchids. Historically, the area around Mount Rendova was of strategic importance during the Pacific War, with the US Navy using the region as a base. Today, the mountain is an important natural area and a symbol of the untouched wilderness of the Solomon Islands.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Accessible via boat from Munda or other New Georgia hubs to Rendova Island, followed by hiring local guides at coastal villages.
📅
Best season
Generally safest during the drier mid-year months, as wet conditions make the steep volcanic slopes dangerously slick and unstable.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The route to the 1060m volcanic peak is steep and heavily forested, requiring physical scrambling in places over very rough terrain.
🎒
What to bring
Bring robust footwear with aggressive traction, protective gloves for grabbing sharp roots, and plenty of filtered drinking water.
🅿️
Parking
No parking infrastructure exists here; access is purely via marine transport dropping hikers off right at the island's coastal edge.
⚠️
Safety
The volcanic terrain can be very unstable; dense jungle obscures steep drop-offs, making straying from the local guide extremely dangerous.
⏱️
Time needed
Usually requires at least a demanding two-day expedition with an overnight jungle camp to safely ascend and descend the peak.
