Mono is the largest island of the Treasury Islands in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands, located near the border with Papua New Guinea. The island is of volcanic origin and is characterized by dense rainforests and steep cliffs, making it a rugged but ecologically valuable area. Historically, Mono gained strategic importance during World War II when it was recaptured from Japanese occupiers in October 1943 by New Zealand and US forces during Operation Goodtime. This invasion marked the first amphibious landing by New Zealand troops since World War I. Today, residents live in small coastal villages such as Stirling and primarily engage in subsistence farming and fishing. The island's remoteness has helped preserve its traditional culture and pristine nature, making Mono a place of significant historical and ecological interest.
