Mono Island is the largest of the Treasury Islands and was the site of a major Allied operation in 1943. On October 27, 1943, as part of Operation Goodtime, New Zealand forces supported by U.S. troops landed on Mono to expel the Japanese garrison. This marked the first opposed amphibious landing by New Zealand troops since the Gallipoli campaign of World War I.
