Mono Island (Solomon Islands)

Weather…

Mono Island is the largest of the Treasury Islands and was the site of a major Allied operation in 1943. On October 27, 1943, as part of Operation Goodtime, New Zealand forces supported by U.S. troops landed on Mono to expel the Japanese garrison. This marked the first opposed amphibious landing by New Zealand troops since the Gallipoli campaign of World War I. The combat on the mountainous, densely forested island was fierce, with Japanese defenders utilizing caves and rugged terrain for cover. Once secured, Mono Island became a crucial communication hub and observation post, monitoring Japanese movements toward Bougainville. Strategic control of Mono and nearby Stirling Island allowed the Allies to establish air superiority in the sector. Today, Mono is known for its pristine natural beauty and deep historical ties to New Zealand military history, with several wartime memorials located on the island.
