Enogai Inlet (Solomon Islands)

Weather…

Enogai Inlet is a remote waterway on the Dragon's Peninsula of Northern New Georgia, which witnessed intense combat during the New Georgia campaign in July 1943. The inlet served as a critical logistics point for Japanese forces, facilitating the transfer of supplies to their garrisons at Bairoko and Munda. US Marine Raiders launched a difficult overland assault through dense swamps to capture the inlet and neutralize its coastal batteries. The battle for Enogai was characterized by harsh conditions, including extreme humidity and tropical diseases, making it one of the most taxing missions for the Raiders. The successful capture of the inlet on July 10, 1943, significantly disrupted Japanese sea lanes in the region. Today, Enogai is a secluded area where visitors can still find rusted Japanese 140mm coastal guns and other military debris abandoned in the undergrowth.
