York is a historic Krio village on the Atlantic coast of Sierra Leone's Western Area Rural District, lying about 30 kilometers south-west of Freetown. The settlement was founded in the early 19th century by liberated African slaves, the so-called Recaptives, who were rescued by British authorities from illegal slavers and settled in a series of planned villages along the peninsula. Together with Bathurst, Regent, Kent, Wilberforce, and Hastings, York belongs to the characteristic chain of these founding Krio villages and still preserves colonial wooden and stone houses, an old Anglican church, and a historic cemetery. Most residents of York belong to the Krio community, whose culture, language, and religious tradition are defining elements of Sierra Leone. Today, York lives mainly from fishing, small trade, boat building, and a growing tourism sector that visits the beaches, forests, and historic sites of the peninsula. The peninsular road allows regular travel to Freetown and to the beaches at River Number Two, Tokeh, and Lakka. York Central, a major regeneration of former railway land beside the station, advanced in 2024-25 with the new National Railway Museum 'Central Hall' opening planned for 2025. York's Mayor of York and North Yorkshire was first elected in May 2024.
