Novi Sad, often called the 'Serbian Athens,' is the cultural heart of the Vojvodina province. Situated on the banks of the Danube, the city is dominated by the massive Petrovaradin Fortress, perched on a rock on the opposite shore. The fortress, famous for its 'reversed' clock tower (where the large hand indicates hours), hosts the world-renowned EXIT Festival every summer, attracting tens of thousands of visitors. The historical city center is characterized by elegant buildings from the Austro-Hungarian era. Freedom Square (Trg Slobode) is the city's heart, surrounded by the City Hall and the impressive Name of Mary Catholic Church with its colorful tiled roof. Dunavska Street, the city's oldest thoroughfare, invites strolling with its pastel-colored facades, small shops, and cozy cafes. Novi Sad is known for its multicultural atmosphere and relaxed pace of life. The 'Štrand' beach on the Danube is regarded as one of Europe's finest river beaches. Nearby attractions include the wineries of Sremski Karlovci and the Fruška Gora National Park with its numerous monasteries. The city was a European Capital of Culture in 2022, highlighting its rich heritage and modern dynamism.
