Barzan Palace (Saudi Arabia)

Weather…

Barzan Palace was the magnificent seat of power for the Al Rashid dynasty in Hail and was considered one of the architectural wonders of the Arabian Peninsula in the 19th century. The palace's construction began in 1808 under the rule of Muhammad bin Abdul-Muhsin Al Ali and was significantly expanded by successive Al Rashid rulers. The name 'Barzan' translates to 'prominent' or 'lofty' in Arabic, reflecting its towering structure which spanned three floors, a rarity for the desert architecture of that period. The complex covered an expansive area of over 300,000 square meters, housing government offices, royal reception halls, private quarters, and artisan workshops. Following the fall of the Al Rashid rule in 1921, much of the palace was demolished under the new administration, which is seen today as a significant cultural loss for the region. Currently, only two of the original towers remain at the site, testifying to the former grandeur and political weight of Hail as a commercial and political hub. The ruins are now carefully preserved to commemorate the region's historical narrative.
