At-Turaif in Diriyah (Saudi Arabia)

Weather…

The At-Turaif district in Diriyah is the birthplace of the Saudi state and was the first seat of the Al Saud family. Founded in the 15th century, the settlement is located on the banks of Wadi Hanifa and is renowned for its unique Najdi architectural style. It was here in 1744 that the alliance between Imam Muhammad bin Saud and Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab was formed, laying the foundation for the First Saudi State. At-Turaif served as the political and religious center of the region until its destruction by Ottoman-Egyptian forces in 1818. The ruins include monumental structures such as the Salwa Palace, which was the residence of the Imams, as well as mosques and residential buildings made of mud bricks. In 2010, At-Turaif was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Today, the district is the centerpiece of a massive restoration project aimed at reviving Diriyah as a world-class cultural and tourism destination. Visitors can explore reconstructed alleys and learn about early Saudi history through various on-site museums.
