Miercurea Nirajului is a town in Mureș County, Transylvania, situated in the fertile Niraj River valley. Known as Nyárádszereda in Hungarian, the town serves as a vital cultural and economic hub for the Szekler community in the region. Its history is marked by a major political event in 1605 when Stephen Bocskai was elected Prince of Transylvania on its grounds, an event commemorated by a statue in the town center. The town's name, derived from the Slavic word for Wednesday, indicates its historical role as a regional marketplace. Today, Miercurea Nirajului is famous throughout Romania for its intensive agriculture, particularly its carrots and other vegetables. The town blends its historical Szekler identity with modern administration, having officially regained its town status in 2003. It has a welcoming central square, historic churches, and a strategic location between Târgu Mureș and the Sovata resort area.
