Masmak Fortress (Saudi Arabia)

Weather…

The Masmak Fortress is a landmark of Saudi national history located in the heart of old Riyadh. Built around 1865 using clay and mud bricks, the fortress originally served as a defensive structure and later as an ammunition depot. It is world-renowned for the events of January 1902, when the future King Abdulaziz Al Saud captured the fortress in a daring raid. This victory marked the beginning of the reconquest of Riyadh and was a pivotal step in the foundation of the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The building is characterized by its four massive watchtowers and thick walls designed to withstand the desert heat. Today, the carefully restored fortress houses a museum that documents the history of the unification of Saudi Arabia. Visitors can still see the broken tip of a spear embedded in the wooden gate, a relic from the historic 1902 battle. The interior features a traditional diwan, a mosque, and a well, offering a glimpse into life in the region during the late 19th century.
