Historically, the city was the capital of the Sudair region and an important stop on the caravan routes. The city's name comes from the Arabic word for 'to gather', referring to the fact that various roads and valleys met here. Al-Majma'ah has preserved its historical character, especially in the old town, where traditional Najdi-style mud-brick buildings can be seen.
